Bachelor of arts (or Bachelor of subjects) is a relatively new term in British university usage. Its earlier form, Bachelor of education, was used from the late 19th century to describe the education system for undergraduate studies, which was seen as a direct precursor to the modern university.

So what is meant by the term bachelor of arts? According to Oxford Dictionary, the word “arm” was used to describe the study of arts and sciences in the 17th century, when it was used to refer to the “study of tools and dexterity” (1620). The term was used in similar ways to today’s college education system.
